Rheinhessen has long been known for its favourable climate. Grapes that can be considerably more challenging to grow elsewhere in Germany have the chance to ripen beautifully here, not least Spätburgunder, the German name for Pinot Noir.

At Battenfeld-Spanier, the balance between ripeness and freshness is key. The grapes are carefully monitored right up until harvest to preserve that sought-after juicy character and the acidity that gives the wine its energy. The wine is then aged in third-use barriques, allowing the fruit to remain at the forefront while the oak adds subtle structure and spice.
